My name is Clare and I am 38 years of age. I have three children and I live in Hertfordshire. I work full-time as a funeral arranger so life is a little jam packed.
When I was at school I was always the last to be picked for teams and I would always be one of the last to cross the line at the cross country. Sport wasn’t my thing! When growing up most of my time was spent in the countryside jumping ditches and building dens.
In 2014 I decided it was time to get fit. I spent the majority of time sitting on my bum, I sat down all day at work and would sit down all evening watching TV. I was getting older and now was the time to start taking care of myself.
In 2015 I was booked to take part in the Brighton 10km, which takes place on the same day as Brighton Marathon, It was whilst I was in Brighton that my Little Nan passed away. Nan was being cared for by St Clare Hospice in Harlow, Essex when she passed away. I decided that weekend that I would run the Brighton Marathon in 2016 in memory of Little Nan and to raise money for St Clare Hospice.
So I put in the months of training required, plodding the streets of Hertfordshire during my long slow run every weekend. April 2016 arrived and I ran Brighton. I couldn’t believe that I had completed a Marathon, Me! Clare! completed a Marathon in 5:47:31!. Fair enough, the time wasn’t amazing and although I felt like I had been run over by a steam train at mile 19 I completed it! At that point I promised myself that I would never, Ever, run another marathon.
Now 2017 has arrived and I will be running 12 races over the year, including 2 marathons. Once again I will be raising money for St Clare Hospice. Yes, I am completely nuts and I have no idea how the year is going to progress but I am excited and all I can say is ‘Bring It ON!’
